Auckland, New Zealand
Architect: Daryl Maguire
With a recent redevelopment costing over NZD$240 million, New Zealand’s main stadium and almost century-old sports ground Eden Park was transformed into the stunning venue for 2011’s Rugby World Cup.
Auckland’s Eden Park, was squarely in the spotlight in 2011: the venue was watched by a global audience of four billion during 2011’s Rugby World Cup. With its recent redevelopment, the stadium was pumped up for the event – with the latest technology for optimal efficiency, an eye-catching iconic stadium skin and increased seating capacity of 60,000 designed to bring audiences closer to the sporting action.
With almost half a million people going through Eden Park in nearly six weeks during the Rugby World Cup, bathrooms were going to get a lot of use and abuse, prompting the architects to pay very close attention to the bathroom fittings. The architects scrutinized products for their performance and longevity and found GROHE to be a natural choice as a well-known and proven brand. When evaluating GROHE’s cisterns, for instance, Populous selected GROHE for the cisterns’ speed of refilling. The bathrooms have been so successful, that there were hardly massive queues outside the bathrooms even during the Rugby World Cup season.
